Covid-19 and the Global South

Worried about the consequences of the coronavirus-induced depression? The next few years are going to be very difficult and are sure to polarise further the class and generational differences that have ripped apart British politics these last few years. But in a number of ways, the developed world is lucky. It has the health infrastructure, strong institutions, and the expert knowledge to pull through the crisis relatively undamaged in the long-term. Assuming their government's aren't incompetent or borderline psychopathic. The challenge in the developing world, however, is much greater. A number of countries lack the technical base or resources to mitigate the consequences of the pandemic and their efforts are further weakened by the debt burden and, if they happen to reside in an oil producing region, the geopolitical games of the great powers. In this interview with Alex, Adam Hanieh looks at the impact of Covid-19 on the developing world and sketches out a bleak picture the mainstream media are simply refusing to cover.

Was thinking about how global neoliberalism plays into this the other day: Western countries have the largesse of breaking with austerity and implementing massive spending measures by virtue of their position at the top of the pecking order. Southern countries operate under a kind of pseudo gold standard where they are forced into something like balanced budgets or risk massive capital flight, disinvestment, inflation and then IMF austerity

Or US drone strikes, its a shame they don't get out onto the streets for that!

In fact why hasn't the guy who filmed the police officer murdering George Floyd suffered the same fate as Julian Assange, who exposed the crimes of more US stormtroopers? As Jim Denham would say, by exposing that police officer he puts other officers at risk!

Incidentally, the British government are psychopaths. Not content with locking down way too late, and when the lockdown came it was half hearted, they have decided to open up way way too quickly.

I reckon the Tories want to be top of the Death league table, they had already outdone every terrorist group in history with their murderous austerity, now they have outdone themselves by simply saying, fuck em and let those Brits die.

Far worse than ISIS.
