* There were two by-elections in Scotland.

Local council by-elections are often laws unto themselves. What's going on locally, unsurprisingly, tends to bear on their outcomes. Occasionally national events impinge on and determine the outcomes of these contests. Between 2010 and 2015 the dark deeds of the Liberal Democrats and the rise of UKIP to national prominence were reflected at a local level. And now, with strong performances since the resumption of by-elections in March the Tories' fortunes have suddenly nose dived. What we saw in North Shropshire appears to be playing out locally. I.e. Whoever is perceived as best placed to see the Tories off finds votes clustering around them. Because of this, December was the worst set of results the party has experienced since this site started covering by-elections. Here's to hoping new record breaking losses can be look forwarded to in the new year!
