Our Friends in the North

The England flags are out. Cars are festooned with the cross of St George. It can only mean the four yearly football jamboree of the World Cup is here!

An accident of birth means it would be churlish for me not to wish England well, especially as I've cheered them on in the past. But as an internationalist, anti-imperialist, and a socialist there's only really one team worthy of unconditional but critical (military) support:

Comrade, downplay it as you might, you still know that tears will be running down your St George Cross-painted face and into your Carling when Lampard misses the decisive penalty against the Germans!

A comrade of mine wrote an interesting piece on North Korean Football back in April.

They've quite the heritage, beating Italy in 1966 and gaining three from Portugal before losing 5-3. Intense stuff.

All my best for the team. They'll need it.

The DPRK do have a quite decent football team. I remember seeing a documentary about there 66 team by BBC Four they played a brutal game against the Soviet Union were the teams spent more time kicking each other then the ball.

I wonder if they'll ever get a chance to play against the states, (fingers crossed).

It wont surprise you to know I've been following the fortunes of the North Korean team Phil...I think people will be quite surprised by them...they got through the qualifying rounds well and had a couple of decent results in the friendlies.

Not stunning to watch, and they are in the most difficult group, but I actually can't wait for Tuesday when they play Brazil.

The team is ultra defensive and reliant on a strong individual up front. A bit like the country itself you could say.

I don't think so, FLT. My reaction when Rob Green fumbled the ball into his goal? Laughter.

Looking forward to the Jucheist footy festivities on Tuesday Bro L. Want us to bring some booze?

Interesting that the North Koreans have been training in the local gyms, contrast that with the seclusion of all the other squads. The media are putting this down to lack of funds but maybe it has more to do with good old socialist egalitarian principles?

Anyway, Kim’s boys are going to take one hell of a beating.

I can't wait to see the North Korean team because they are so shite and starved, that they might actually be the worst team ever to take part.

Did you know Kim Il Sung invented football in 1936?

This was in between deducing the Fibbanaci Sequence and single handedly fighting off an entire Japanese armoured division.
