Lest We Forget

That is why no amount of cajolery, and no attempts at ethical or social seduction, can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred for the Tory Party that inflicted those bitter experiences on me. So far as I am concerned they are lower than vermin. They condemned millions of first-class people to semi-starvation. Now the Tories are pouring out money in propaganda of all sorts and are hoping by this organised sustained mass suggestion to eradicate from our minds all memory of what we went through.
– Nye Bevan, 1948

Hat tip to Jozer by way of Ian Bone.

Great stuff.

See the latest post over at PRT for more details on the aftermath of Bevan's slightly controversial statement.

Quite Right (pun intended) If "There's no such thing as society, only individuals" - then why are the Tory boys and girls always braying on about Broken Society?

Great blog site - we made a link to you today.

I used to have Dennis Skinner pegged as a Labour lefty in the Nye Bevan mould. Class conscious, contemptuous of the Tories, a fine propagandist for (parliamentary) socialism. What happened?

Cheers for the link, Bent. Fine blog you and your comrades have there. I heartily recommend Leftwing Criminologist if you haven't come across it yet. And yes, your link has been reciprocated.

It is very easy to forget of course that after saying words like this Bevan was called into the Labour office and sacked and kicked out of Labour, but of course people forget this, why was he kicked out he was to left of the parties line, the could just about accept the Welfare State council housing and the NHS, but hold on a decent wage for the workers your out.

He was only allowed back once he stated he would Toe the line.

Now look who's attacking the NHS and the Welfare reforms New Labour, seems the tide has turned and if you happen to be disabled and Labour your kicked out or removed or ignored Nye Bevan mate you were wrong.

Nothing wrong with that come on, place here at the bottom of a mine shaft then get all the miners to piss down the shaft then each miner can fill it up,and we can place a nice statue of a a miner on top laughing his balls off.
