No doubt the Tories are hoping that because of the way public sector jobs are concentrated the lions share of the pain from their cuts will hurt areas in the north that vote Labour anyway. So fuck 'em.

If we had PR rather than FPTP Tory votes in the north east and socialist votes in the south east would count for something and you wouldn't get a party of government able to be so cavalier about whole regions of the country.

You forget that, historically, the wealth creation centres of Britain were in the Midlands and the North. In effect it was these industrial heartlands that carried the economy for over 150 years. So next time someone comes along trying to play up the north/south divide to make cheap apologies for Tory policy, remember any subsidies the north gets is pay back for a previous era.
