Left of Labour General Election Results 2024

As the debates over Labour's vote share, the damage done to the Tories by Reform, the Liberal Democrat surge, the breakthrough of the Greens, and the collapse of the SNP rage in the politics discourse, here are the results disproportionate numbers of people who visit this site are interested in: the showing put in by the far left and the large comparatively large numbers of left wing independents.

The results are grouped by party, and are arranged in alphabetical order by constituency. Where applicable, +/- indicates the results from the 2019 election campaign. There are few of these as only a handful of candidates stood then. Underlining indicates a clash with another party/group. Clashes with left independents aren't included for reasons already explained. Likewise, for those fulminating over the inclusion of the Workers' Party on this list the explainer can be found on the same link.

  1. No greens in this list?

  2. Confusingly, Fiona Lali in Stratford and Bow was running as an independent "Supported by the Revolutionary Communist Party", as opposed to running as RCP. I don't know if there are any other such "submarine parties" among the independents - she seems to have been the only candidate promoted by the RCP.

  3. Why do you do this?

I came here hoping for an analysis of the indies who actually won, remarkably enough, in the face of the mentality of the article you write here.

You really should question your motives in posting this tripe.

  4. No, no Greens. Including them would have taken far longer to compile!

  5. I must say, that Left Independents Party's doing very well for a newcomer. Wonder what their secret is?

Some good results for WPB, to be fair, although both their weird platform & my own past experience of a) Galloway b) Respect and c) George Galloway FFS? in 2024? makes me highly reluctant to pin any hopes on them.

The rest... ugh. They should have listened to Edmund Griffiths and/or not bothered.

  6. As organiser for Transform South West Wiltshire, we supported Independent Socialist Candidate Thomas Culshaw (Not listed as far as I could see)

  7. Thanks Phil. You have to wonder what is the tactic? I know in the past when I was I was involved in socialist politics, we did it to raise the profile. I voted CPB this time but what is the tactics?

There were more left independents I reckon

  8. Needs to include Assemble candidates e.g. Farooq Siddique got 1,259 (2.7%) in Bristol East.

  9. Who's MP for Sheffield Darnall?

    1. It's not a constituency: it's a ward in Sheffield SE, Clive Betts (LP). Qais al-Ahdal won the ward with 52% of the vote in May as an independent campaigning on Gaza. Interestingly, of the 23 constituencies Reform didn't stand in, five were in Sheffield.

  10. This is very useful. Many thanks. You have though missed one out. That is Bromsgrove where Sam Ammar gained 1,561 votes, over 10 times that of the WP Aheesha Zahir who you have recorded.

Sam was the Chair of the local LP and had applied to stand but Starmer parachuted in Neena Gill, even though it is an ultra safe Tory seat. Sam resigned from the LP and stood independently. Please can you amend this.

Sam is a British Palestinian and a support of Unite 4 Palestine so I can vouch for her

  12. Looking at this list there are very many "people of global majority" looking names in it, a much higher proportion than among the general population, and indeed immigrants, or recent descendants of immigrants, once upon a time northern, welsh, irish, scottish, were in the past the core of the working class. But it is remarkable how few jamaican/african/polish/chinese/indian/... looking names there seem to be, and my guess that most of the names of "people of global majority" in the list are pakistanis (some may be bangladeshi, but looking at the constituency places I doubt many are). These are some statistics that may be relevant:

    https://www.ethnicity-facts-figures.service.gov.uk/uk-population-by-ethnicity/demographics/working-age-population/latest/
“71.8% (26.9 million) of the working age population identified as white British – 89.3% (1.6 million) in Wales and 70.8% (25.2 million) in England after white British, the ethnic groups making up the largest percentages of the working age population were white ‘other’ (7.7%, 2.8 million), black (4.4%, 1.6 million), Indian (3.4%, 1.2 million), black African (2.8%, 1.0 million) and Pakistani (2.7%, 1.0 million)

Which brings me to another topic that is one of the many topics that seems rarely mentioned: the UK population grew from 62m to 71m in the past 15 years, and those new 9m residents are mostly working class (or "lumpenproletariat") working-age adults and nearly all do not have the right to vote. My guesstimate is that currently 20-25% of the english working class are polish/nigerian/romanian/... immigrants without the right to vote (and usually without property). I also guess that the high cost and bureaucracy of acquiring citizenship are designed to keep the number of poor people without the right to vote as high as possible.

  13. Ayoub Khan who won Birmingham Perry Barr was a LibDem for over 20 years and only did quit the two months ago

  14. Here in Wales Labour vote was down and Plaid Cymru vote was increased..
Which along with figures given in this article is definitely food for thought BUT sadly changes nothing and like USA the facade of Democracy continues..

  15. In the previous post on far left candidates, it was said that 242 is by far the most who have ever stood. In 2001, the Socialist Alliance stood 114, the SLP 98 and the Scottish Socialist Party 72. That's 284, plus maybe 25-30 other far left. Of course the results were not as good as last week.
