Local Council By-Elections November 2021

This month saw 43,004 votes cast over 35 local authority contests. All percentages are rounded to the nearest single decimal place. Overall, 15 council seats changed hands. For comparison with October's results, see here.

Who'd want to be an Independent candidate in November? The minus number stuck after them hides a multitude of interesting movements. The Tories stomped on Labour in two seats, but luckily for the party it was able to make up the losses from elsewhere. But really, at this stage of the play, I know by-elections are different but surely some of that disaffection would be feeding through into contests like these? But no, three councillors up, a healthy vote share and standing in more seats than any other party, the Tories remain the ones to beat. But overall, the story is still one of more churn than normal with nearly half of all seats contested changing hands. The only consolation for Labour is it won most votes for once, but that's to be expected when it was defending more seats than any other party.
