Just some colour footage from Berlin in July 1945. Apart from the ruins and the soldiers and the Stalin portrait, it's striking how mundane it all is in its everyday-ness.
Wonderful footage. I had relatives in Germany there at that time I’m serving in the British forces. I remember them taking about People rebuilding their lives and how quickly they managed to do it. Wish I had written it all down. Fascinating piece of sociology. As you say the ordinary amid utter destruction
I don't know. The sheer hostility of the "trummerfrau" faced with a voyeuristic US squaddie with a movie camera (I can't think of any other people with access to, expensive colour film) is palpable. Then there is the unmentioned walls festooned with notes from people seeking family and loved ones (most probably now corpses below a lot of the rubble). Mundane, it ain't.
Video doesn't work. It's on YouTube though
ReplyDeleteThat is VERY annoying.
