* There was one by-election in Scotland
** No by-elections in Wales this month
*** No independent challenges this month, so no clashes
**** Others were Scottish Libertarian (53 votes)
Overall, 6,364 votes were cast over four local authority (tier one and tier two) contests. All percentages are rounded to the nearest single decimal place. The Conservatives won one contest, LibDems two, and SNP one. For comparison with December's results, see here.
January is always a rubbish month for by-election anoraks because there are precious few contests. With just four taking place, no inferences can be drawn - with the partial exception of the LibDem bandwagon trundling through town. Eight are confirmed so far for February, so let the good times roll.
I almost forgot, there's a couple of changes to the recording of results. First off, TUSC are now banished to the Other column. If they can't be bothered to stand in elections any more, I can't be bothered to award them a dedicated box. Secondly, I have replaced the month-by-month changes to party vote averages in favour of a comparison with the same month a year ago. Hopefully this will allow folks to appreciate results in the context of the recent past.
Things aren't looking too good for those who will campaign to win the Stoke Central by-election. The #chickencoup2 crew's plan would appear to be: a) criticise Corbyn publicly and often for frustrating party Remainers with his 3-line whip to create the appearance of disunity and tank Labour in the polls. b) Spook Labour-voting Leavers in two ultra-Leave constituencies when a good chunk of the Labour front bench defies the whip. c) Spook Labour Remainers into the welcoming arms of those loud and proud Remainers, the LibDems. d) Lose both elections. e) Blame Corbyn. f) Forget to point out to Labour members that the whip only applies to stages 1 & 2 of the Bill's passage. g) Forget to point out that the true Tory position on the NHS and workers' rights etc will exposed via this clever strategy. h) This year's #chickencoup2 begins.
ReplyDeleteThe big test for Labour under Corbyn's failing leadership will be the two Parliamentary by-elections in February. I suspect they will certainly lose Copeland to the Tories and possibly Stoke to UKIP.
ReplyDeleteOne from the ultra-left and one from the right of the labour movement. It's almost as if they want Labour to lose.
ReplyDeleteAllow me to refer you both to the extensive coverage of the Stoke-on-Trent contest below.
Ultra-left and soft left Stokies who support Corbyn's rational and effective approach to the 50 Bill should sign this open letter:

Stoke North folk are signing in droves!
You once posted an article on White Nationalists and Anti Semitism and now the White Nationalists have had their main demand realised by the President no less, i.e. a blanket ban on Muslims, you remain creepily silent on the issue, giving us instead the machinations of Stoke.
ReplyDeleteNow I know the pro war, decent left fucking hates Muslims and Islam and would happily go round the world taking out any Muslim man between the ages of 15 and 99 (judging from their comments over the past 16 years or so) but some comment would be nice, even if it is a well done Donald, but can you go further please there are girls being refused entry to schools!
For your information, I've been ill and not up to blogging. Though I'm sure you'll find plenty of what you crave if you consult my Twitter feed.
ReplyDeleteIf you want to pay me cash money so I don't have to work, I'll happily do more than one substantive blog a day.
Take it easy and get better soon Phil.
