Tbh I think the era of the dedicated handheld console is dead. But there might be a future for Nintendo and Sony's brand in this market if future iterations of the DS and PSP emulate the competition.Philhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06298147857234479278noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4486641877026778105.post-2674911337699524452013-05-21T23:51:32.802+01:002013-05-21T23:51:32.802+01:00If portable gaming is the new thing - and the deat...If portable gaming is the new thing - and the death of traditional consoles - why do portable platforms like the 3DS and PS Vita do so badly?

I think the real problem with the Wii U is that nobody actually wanted one - the Wii wasn't running out of steam or hitting any major limits, so the Wii U wasn't a natural progression. Compare the PS2/PS3 or XBox/XBox 360 transitions, which did work. But there appears to be precious little on the horizon at the moment. A new Super Smash Bros is supposed to be on the way, but Nintendo should be bringing out the big guns.

Unfortunately for them, they do need the Wii U to perform respectably if they want to stay in the console game ...Philhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06298147857234479278noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4486641877026778105.post-51330585958278859212013-05-21T22:44:46.718+01:002013-05-21T22:44:46.718+01:00Nintendo did, of course, have the Virtual Boy disa...Nintendo did, of course, have the Virtual Boy disaster - a cock-up so devastating that the machine didn't even make European launch.

My point here is Nintendo have made cock-ups in the past and bounced back - largely due to the almost universal appeal of the franchises it holds close such as the various guises of Mario and Zelda...

Having gone from 8-bit computers to Gameboy to SNES to 64, it was the Gamecube which turned me away from the Nintendo club I had been a member of since pre-teens and ended up, oddly, favouring the Xbox as the natural progression.

I did seriously weigh up an Xbox 360 but then the Wii appeared and it changed everything for me. Don't forget that many considered the Wii (or Revolution as it was first dubbed) to be the final nail in the coffin for Nintendo back in 2005 - why, after all, would anyone want to do anything different but clutch a double D-pad controller sat on the sofa? A remote control with a nunchuk? Are you having a laugh?!

It suspect than rather being a complete failure, the Wii-U will go down the same route as the Gamecube - a novel machine ultimately overpowered by better and more versatile competitors. But it is too early to write it off entirely.

A great deal depends on the software base in the coming year. One or two genuine "must have" games for the Wii-U can turn the systems fortunes to a degree - don't forget there are still Zelda, Mario Kart, Metroid, Donkey King, Yoshi and many other solid gold in-house Nintendo franchises that have yet to see an outing on the Wii-U.

Ultimately, the software is completely key to a system's success and the SNES remains my favourite machine of old in the retro stakes because of the vast array of utter classics, and hidden gems that still appear on Ebay, that mean we can carry on acting like teenagers with it today.

I must say I am underwhelmed by the Xbox One. Streams TV shows? meh...my smart TV can go on the internet and do that already, so can my Tivo. Used games attract a fee to download? How to alienate the poorer gamers out there at a stroke...

The bigger issue in gaming is the platform has become less relevant. There are great pick-up and play titles for 80p on your mobile. I feel the Xbox One and PS4 might not fly off the shelves in the same way as the Wii-U because of this cultural shift.

I am not convinced by this "television is central" business proposed by the Xbox One.

All of the above said, I have decided to go for a Wii-U. I get the feeling it could be short-lived and given the downloadable nature of games these days, this could be the last opportunity to collect as many games as possible to complete a system so avidly...

Rant overAlex Dawsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14197211489381075789noreply@blogger.com
