There was nothing technically wrong with removing Saddam, who was a bad man, except for the consequences of doing so. I don't think for a moment most of the anti-war brigade however gave it any such consideration, and that includes JC. They opposed it because America was involved and it was therefore "bad".

But if Iraq had been handled correctly, there was a slim possibility it might not have fallen apart, and that was more by error than design. The point being - what is there to apologise for? If it is for the mistakes, yes. But in principle? This was NOT an attack on the Muslim world, as most would have it (otherwise Kosovo would be an attack on behalf of Muslims against Christians?), if was a grave strategic error, that has led to the mess we gave today. But that will not be the spirit of any JC apology. Instead it will feed the "clash if civilisations" beloved by jihadis and their Leftist apologists, which will only serve to feed myths of victimisation, grievance and bourgeois self-flagellation. (And the rise of American teabaggers, who were the most militantly pro-war section, notwithstanding a few irrelevant Ron Paul groupies). In honesty Jezza won't get any change from me for this.

Pete Hitchens, whom I quite like in a way, said the other week that surely what we need to do is assess Camoron's intervention in Libya. That hasn't got the criticism it deserves and there wasn't that constituency of opposition. Jasquithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14246701347539264295noreply@blogger.com
