Immediately tackling economic insecurity would be helpful - after all, mental health problems have exploded over the course of 36 neoliberal years. But ultimately, you're right. Sorting it out properly requires some very radical changes indeed.Philhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06298147857234479278noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4486641877026778105.post-89495424396733306732015-03-25T17:22:05.424+00:002015-03-25T17:22:05.424+00:00“How do you deal with people who have committed ho...“How do you deal with people who have committed horrific and violent acts and yet at the same time have not been held criminally responsible for them? “

I genuinely thought this was going to be a piece about Tony Blair.

On mental health I was struck that funding had gone down while reported cases had exploded. Not only does this show that capitalism doesn’t automatically meet needs but I think also indicates that it isn’t taken seriously.

My mother worked in mental health, among seriously disturbed patients and the fact is that some of the backgrounds of these people were so horrific to be beyond our true comprehension. Concern for the abused child today will turn into hatred for the damaged adult to become.

The level of services and resources thrown at this problem shows it is well down the priority list, well below even the most trivial of things.

As a society we get back what we put in.

Socialists, ironically, seem to always blame those in charge for this, whereas I see everyone sharing the blame. I say ironically because socialists should be challenging the great leader idea and moving us towards less hierarchical ways of thinking about the system. One first step would be to level responsibility at all levels. In the Rotherham child abuse case, those lower down blamed management for inaction, but I think the social workers should look at themselves and ask why they were so in awe of management.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
