No banks will be suffering. Capital and Corporate flight plus the loss of a large piece of the skilled workforce through emmigration could could set of a reaction opening the doors for the ultras of the right. Golden Dawn, whose armed members have being operating in the former Yugoslavia, and who are financed through their smuggling operations may be low in the polls, but when the infrastructure collapses, they will be there to fill the vacuum. The Greek military do not have a reputation of standing by and when the wages of the Police and Soldiers dry up, the democratic voice could be snuffed out. As a baby boomer the sight of tanks on the streets is nothing new. What would the West do, nothing much.

http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/2012/05/201251585345663264.htmljim mcleannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4486641877026778105.post-33837728638829329002015-07-06T08:06:37.794+01:002015-07-06T08:06:37.794+01:00"Decadence" - from the perspective of th..."Decadence" - from the perspective of the Eastern European members of the Euro (where the average wage is half the Greek's E1000), the Greeks might appear pretty decadent too.

Decadence is a problem that afflicts all strata of Western European society - it is the by-product of (relative) wealth. Arguably, the Greeks' No was pretty decadent if they thought that they would not be thrown out of the Euro, as it appears many believe. That may be so, but it is a big gamble - austerity will only increase in the short-medium term with a return of the drachma.

As I said, in the absence of reasonable terms from the EU, a No and Euro exit seems the only long term solution to Troica-enforced economic slavery, however I wouldn't wish it on anyone, and I fear the majority of people have no idea what is waiting for them if they exit the Euro.

I find all this talk of "no" to austerity hopelessly naive. So, they said no - so that's going to make it go away? There is only one - dumb - game in this town. The fact that so many Lefties are celebrating this "victory" seems pretty decadent too.

As the Guardian said, ultimately Syziria understood its not about economics but politics. But that cuts both ways - the EU will not want to lose face now, particularly Merkel, and the Latins have their own issues. It is anyone's guess if they will strike a deal, but one thing can be sure - life will not get easier for ordinary Greeks.Speedynoreply@blogger.com
