So for example, when Jeremy goes to a STWC fundraiser we should see loud cheers from most PLP members.BCFGnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4486641877026778105.post-76939253568372978672015-12-16T11:21:14.846+00:002015-12-16T11:21:14.846+00:00"Dan is a columnist who makes his living by w..."Dan is a columnist who makes his living by writing comment. Nothing wrong with that."

Actually, there is something wrong with it. High-paid journos function as undisclosed agents for principals, either media proprietors or their advertisers. The misrepresentation of such commentators as 'independent' means means that public political debate functions *as if* it was permissible to pay the Speaker of the House of Commons for additional time to the exclusion of other MPs (John Trevor was sacked as speaker for taking such bribes in 1695).

Mike Macnair
Mike Macnairhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16720027485945300257noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4486641877026778105.post-20313231096874595852015-12-16T10:17:41.074+00:002015-12-16T10:17:41.074+00:00'Which is not to say that the Blairite wing, o...'Which is not to say that the Blairite wing, on balance, are not better for ordinary people than the Corbynites, by simple virtue that they stand a chance of being elected'

No leader of the Labour party of any stripe would stand a chance of being elected in 2020 as things are at the moment.David Parryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16543341419630019419noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4486641877026778105.post-14903823492935653272015-12-16T08:50:56.500+00:002015-12-16T08:50:56.500+00:00He's Glenda Jackson's son and has never be...He's Glenda Jackson's son and has never been anything but a member of the bourgeois elite: the fact that his particular wing of the elite has lost out, for the moment, is why he is so happy to pack up and leave. As you say, it was never about "them", it was always about him.

Which is not to say that the Blairite wing, on balance, are not better for ordinary people than the Corbynites, by simple virtue that they stand a chance of being elected, and as I think you said a bad Labour government is always better than a good Tory one, but let's not confuse a hack on a Tory paper for someone who really gives a damn about anyone but himself.

Of course, he "does" care, we all care, which is why we take an interest in these things, and we all have to earn a crust too, but is Dan Hodges resignation from the Labour Party, though not the Barclay brothers' purse, really going to improve the lives of ordinary people in any way?

I'm reminded of the kind of character that appears in Jonathan Coe's "What a Carve Up". Corbyn's not in favour of bombing IS, therefore he's an apologist for them; there's been some pushback against critics of the leadership*, therefore the party's been taken over by brownshirts. And Enoch Powell was a respectable racist (not very - it killed his career), therefore Corbyn... er... is just as bad only different (will this do?).

I almost find myself wondering why he really opposes Corbyn - but I doubt he could articulate it himself.

*The words "a sustained campaign of harassment and intimidation" are hyperlinked to a page about... a union sending a critical letter!Philhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07009879034507926661noreply@blogger.com
