It's here. What do you think?
Well ... it's alright. It's certainly different fare to the usual UK Eurovision entry. Electroswing is definitely not my thing (this is), but it has just enough cheesy quirkiness to go down well with the Eurovision audience. And the scatting in the middle reminds one of the late and much-missed Scatman John, which will endear our entry to come corners of Europe.
The fly in the ointment is, unfortunately, the appalling lyrics. Have a listen. Alex is acting the part of the controlling boyfriend who's laying the law down to Bianca about how she should and shouldn't behave on holiday. Basically if she "gets into trouble" while out on the lash it's because she didn't handle herself well. Come on, this is 2015. Is that the sort of message we want to be putting out there?
I do like electroswing, so I do like the song. That said, being a fan of the genre left me slightly wishing they'd sent an established act like the Correspondents or the Electric Swing Circus.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure it'll win, but at least it'll stand out. The worst thing we could have done was send another anthemic ballad, because there's going to lots of those at the contest. I think that hurt our entry last year - there was nothing wrong with Molly Smitten-Downes' song, but it was played near the end of the show, after hearing various songs that sounded quite similar (though she still scored higher than Engelbert Humperdink or Bonnie Tyler - goes to show it's about the song not the big name).
Be fair, she's giving him some fairly controlling advice as well. But the reason it sounds old-fashioned is that it's a straight rip of Button Up Your Overcoat (from 1928),words, tune & all. As a Eurovision entry it's certainly different, though - even Paolo Nutini isn't doing this kind of thing any more.
ReplyDeleteLove It!!!
ReplyDeleteIt is like they have captured the mood of the times! How have they got into my soul so deeply and how have come to express my inner most thoughts so perfectly!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, this garbage is yet more ammunition for ISIS.
I don't mind electro-swing so much, but I have to say this is pretty terrible. It's just so lacking in passion and dead. The singers seem like far from being there to swing they're being forced to sing at gunpoint before being shot at dawn.
ReplyDeleteIt's the kind of song that would appear on Luc Besson's sci-fi film the Fifth Element.
ReplyDeleteA sparkling, brilliantly realised... dystopia.
